Capturing the Pulse of the Underground

In the flashing lights and haze of the night, where basslines ripple through the crowd and time seems to dissolve, you’ll often find Chris Nowak, better known as Lost in Thin Air. His lens moves with instinct, chasing not just the music, but the emotion it stirs —

the raw connection between artist and audience that defines underground culture.

His journey into nightlife photography started almost by accident. Already working as a photographer, he was asked by a friend — a DJ — to capture a few shots during a performance. What began as a casual favor turned into a turning point. When the organizer saw his photos, they immediately asked for more, and just like that, Chris found himself pulled into the vibrant, unpredictable energy of the underground scene.

Since then, his camera has become an extension of his senses. When the lights dim and the first beat drops, he steps into a kind of trance — hyperfocused, absorbed, and fully attuned to the rhythm of the crowd. For him, there’s no separation between documenting an event and experiencing it.

“I let myself be carried away by the energy”

He moves constantly, weaving through bodies and lights, searching for that one frame where sound, emotion, and movement collide.

One of his most powerful shots, he recalls, captures that perfect storm: a DJ locked in concentration, a hand reaching out from the crowd, lasers slicing through the smoke. It’s a single frozen moment that says everything about why he does what he does. The photo, he says, “has it all — the chaos, the connection, the beauty of losing yourself in the night.”

For Chris, the relationship between music, light, and emotion is at the heart of his work. When those three align, something almost spiritual happens — and he feels a deep responsibility to capture that magic.

“A good vibe in a crowd is something you can’t fake. It’s real, it’s powerful, and it’s why I keep doing this”

In the end, his message is simple but profound: art matters. Whether it’s a photograph, a DJ set, or the shared euphoria of a crowd moving as one — it’s all part of the same pulse that drives him. Through his work as Lost in Thin Air, Chris doesn’t just document the underground — he translates its soul into images that linger long after the night fades.
